Scripture: Joshua 20:1-20:6
Introduction
When the children of Israel were settled in the land of Canaan, God ordained that six cities of refuge be set aside, to which a man might flee for security, if he had unintentionally killed another man.
The manslayer in Israel had to flee to one of the cities of refuge
- Joshua 20:3ܝܫܘܥ ܒܪܢܘܢ ܟ:3
Even so, all who would be saved by the grace of God must flee by faith to the refuge God has appointed, and that refuge is Christ.
- Acts 4:12ܦܪܟܣܝܣ ܕ:12
- II Timothy 4:3-4ܒ. ܛܝܡܬܐܘܣ ܕ:3 – 4
Once he entered the city four things happened:
- Joshua 20:4ܝܫܘܥ ܒܪܢܘܢ ܟ:4
“Shall declare his cause in the ears of the elders of that city”
In the same way sinners declare: “God be merciful to me a sinner”.
- Luke 18:13ܠܘܩܐ ܝܚ:13
He came under the protection of the city
In the same way sinners come under the protection of Christ.
- John 10-27-28ܝܘܚܢܢ ܝ:27 – 28
- Psalm 119:14ܡܙܡܘܖ̈ܐ ܩܝܛ:14
He received a complete dismissal of charges of all guilt.
In the same way the sinner saved by Grace receives a complete acquittal from all guiltܝܫܘܥ ܒܪܢܘܢ ܟ:5
- Psalm 32:1ܡܙܡܘܖ̈ܐ ܠܒ:1
- Psalm 85:2ܡܙܡܘܖ̈ܐ ܦܗ:2
- Colossians 2:13ܩܘܠܣܝ̈ܐ ܒ:13
- Ephesians 4:32ܐܦܣܝ̈ܐ ܕ:32
He was able to return to his own city and his own house when the high priest died.
- Joshua 20:6ܝܫܘܥ ܒܪܢܘܢ ܟ:6
And he is cleansed from all sin by the blood of Christ, who died as his representative
- John 10:11ܝܘܚܢܢ ܝ:11
- John 10:15ܝܘܚܢܢ ܝ:15
