Introduction –

§  The tongue is a tattletale, it tells on the heart, and is the revealer of the heart.

-          Matthew 12:36ܡܬܝ ܝܒ:36

-          Colossians 3:16-17ܩܘܠܣܝ̈ܐ ܓ:16– 17 

-          James 1:26ܝܥܩܘܒܼ ܐ:26 

James gives us five compelling reasons for the control of the tongue.

1)      The tongue has the potential to condemn (vs. 1-2a)ܓܲܪܫܵܢܵܐ ܠܕܝܼܘܵܢ

2)      Tongue has the power to control (vs. 2b-5)ܚܲܝܠܵܐ ܕܙܲܒܛܸܢ

3)      Tongue has the power to destroy or condemn (vs. 5b-6a)ܚܲܝܠܵܐ ܕܬܲܠܸܩ ܝܲܢ ܕܦܲܪܦܸܣ

-          Proverbs 16:27ܡܬ̈ܠܐ ܝܘ:27 

-          Proverbs 26:20ܡܬ̈ܠܐ ܟܘ:20 

-          Psalm 52:2-5ܡܙܡܘܖ̈ܐ ܢܒ:2 – 5

A)      System of iniquityܕܘܼܢܝܹ̈ܐ ܕܥܵܘܠܵܐ

B)      Defiles the entire bodyܠܵܟܸܢ ܦܲܪܣܘܼܦܵܐ

-          Mark 7:20-23ܡܪܩܘܣ ܙ:20 – 23 

C)      Sets on fire the whole course of natureܟܹܐ ܡܲܠܗܹܐ ܠܟ̰ܲܪܚ ܕܒܪܝܼܬܵܐ 

D)      It is set on fire by hellܡܘܼܠܗ݉ܝܼܵܐ ܝܠܹܐ ܐܘܼܦ ܗܿܘ ܡܼܢ ܓܹܗܲܢܵܐ  

4)      Primitiveness to combat (vs. 7-8)ܦܵܠܵܫܵܐ ܕܠܵܐ ܡܲܪܕܘܼܬܵܐ

-          Romans 3:13ܖ̈ܗܘܡܝܐ ܓ:13 

-          Psalm 140:3ܡܙܡܘܖ̈ܐ ܩܡ:3 

5)      Power to compromise (vs. 9-12)ܚܲܝܠܵܐ ܕܗܲܡܙܲܡܬܵܐ ܡܐܲܝܟܼ ܢܵܣܒܲܝ̈ ܒܐܲܦܹ̈ܐ

§  Bless God and curse men (vs. 9)ܒܵܪܲܟܼܬܵܐ ܘܠܝܵܛܬܵܐ

§  Out of the same mouth proceeds blessing and cursing (vs. 10)

§  This ought not to be (vs. 10)ܠܹܐ ܝܠܵܐ ܘܵܓ̰ܸܒ: ܐܵܚܘܿܢܘܵܬܝܼ̈: ܕܐܲܢܹܐ ܗܲܕܟܼܵܐ ܗܵܘܝܼ.

Three illustrations

a)       Does a fountain send forth both sweet and bitter water? ܡ̈ܝܼܵܐ ܚܸܠܝܹ̈ܐ ܘܡܲܪܝܼܖܹ̈ܐ

b)      Can fig tree bear olives?ܟܹܐ ܡܵܨܹܐ: ܐܝܼܠܵܢܵܐ ܕܬܹܐܢܵܐ ܙܲܝܬܹ̈ܐ ܥܵܒܼܸܕ:  

c)       Can a vine bring forth figs?ܟܹܐ ܡܵܨܹܐ: ܓܸܒܬܵܐ ܬܹܐܢܹ̈ܐ ܥܵܒܼܸܕ؛ 

 

Conclusion: So no fountain can yield both salt water and fresh.
