Introduction –

  • Two things at the very outset that they must avoid. Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and greedܗܘܹܡܘܿܢ ܗܸܫܝܲܪ ܡܼܢ ܚܡܝܼܪܵܐ ܕܦܖ̈ܝܼܫܹܐ ܘܛܲܡܲܥܟܵܪܘܼܬܵܐ

The Admonition (vs. 15)ܡܲܢܠܲܣܬܵܐ (ܓ̰ܪ. 15) 

  • Take heed, horao (Hor-ah-o),ܚܙܹܡܘܿܢlook, mark, observe, ܒܗܸܫܝܵܪܘܼܬܵܐ ܓܲܫܩܘܿܢ
  • Then guard. Phulassō (foo-las-so) is a military term:ܘܗ݉ܘܹܡܘܿܢ ܗܸܫܝܵܪ“Provide protective vigilance against every form of greed,ܚܵܡܝܼ، ܒܹܝܬ ܓܵܘܣܵܐ، ܢܛܘܿܪ
  • All covetousness, pleonexias,” ܡܼܢ ܟܠܵܗܿ ܛܲܡܲܥܟܵܪܘܼܬܵܐ– strong word – “all covetousness.” This is the thirst. Pleonexias (pleh-on-ex-ee-ah) is the thirst for more.

The Anecdote (vs. 16-20)ܡܹܬܸܠܬܵܐ (ܓ̰ܪ. 16 – 20)  

  • Vs. 17 – he began to reason with himselfܚܫܸܒܼܠܹܐ ܒܓܵܢܹܗ (ܓ̰ܪ. 17)
  • Vs. 18 – He found a solution. In two verses: eight “I’s” and four “my’s”(ܓ̰ܪ. 18)
  • Vs. 19 – I will say to my soul! eat, drink, and party.ܒܸܬ ܐܵܡܪܸܢ ܠܓܵܢܝܼ(ܓ̰ܪ. 19)
  • The problem with this man in the story is he forgot three things: God, others, and his own mortalityܐܲܠܵܗܵܐ، ܐ݉ܚܹܖ̈݉ܢܹܐ، ܡܵܝܘܿܬܵܐ.
  • Vs. 20 – Then comes the surpriseܡܼܢ ܢܵܓܸܣܬܲܢ (ܓ̰ܪ. 20)

The Application (vs. 21)ܝܘܼܠܦܵܢܵܐ ܩܵܐ ܟܠ ܝܘܿܡܵܐ (ܓ̰ܪ. 21) 

  • When you have more than you need, the first consideration is not a bigger barn.
