Introduction

  • There were total of six phases to the trial of Jesus leading up to His execution. Three of them with the Jewish leaders and three of them with the Roman leaders.

  • Why all of a sudden are they so concerned to get the Romans to execute Jesus?

Formal Trial begins by Pilate

1) Part one of the trial: Accusation (vs. 29-33)ܣܡܵܐ ܩܵܕܡܵܝܵܐ ܕܕܝܲܢܬܵܐ: ܥܸܠܬܵܐ (ܓ̰ܪ. 29 – 33)

  • Historical background: In 4 B.C. Herod the Great died - king of Israel. In his will, he divided up his kingdom between his sons. Antipasܐܲܢܛܝܼܦܘܿܣ(Galilee), Philipܦܝܼܠܝܼܦܘܿܣ(Trachonitis) and Archelausܐܲܪܟܼܹܠܹܐܘܿܣ(Judea and Samaria).
  • Archelausܐܲܪܟܼܹܠܹܐܘܿܣ, who was over Judea and Samaria, ruled as a tyrantܙܵܠܝܼܡby extortionܫܩܲܠܬܵܐ ܒܚܲܝܠܵܐand later replaced by Romans by Pontus Pilate.
    • John 19:12ܝܘܚܢܢ ܝܛ:12 
  • Pilate asked for an accusation, they accuse him of questioning their integrity (vs.30)ܐܸܢ ܠܵܐ ܗܵܘܹܐ ܗ݉ܘܵܐ ܥܵܒܼܕܵܢܵܐ ܕܒܝܼܫܬܵܐ: ܐܸܠܘܼܟܼ ܠܹܐ ܣܵܦܵܚ ܗ݉ܘܵܘ ܠܹܗ. 
  • Pilate gave the Jews the right to kill Jesus themselves. (vs. 31)

  • Jews quoting the Romans Law (vs. 31)ܠܹܐ ܝܠܵܐ ܒܕܲܣܬܘܿܪ ܐܸܠܲܢ ܠܸܩܛܵܠܵܐ ܠܐܢܵܫܵܐ:
  • Why in the world don’t they just go do what he told them to do? (vs. 32)

2) Part two of the trial: Interrogation (vs. 33-37)ܣܡܵܐ ܬܪܲܝ ܕܕܝܲܢܬܵܐ: ܒܘܼܩܵܖܹ̈ܐ (ܓ̰ܪ. 33 – 37)

  • Jesus is asking Pilate if he is now charging him with a crime? (vs. 34)
  • He is not a king because subjects made Him a king; -   He is a king by nature, and He is a king over a spiritual dominion.ܐܲܚܢܵܢ ܠܵܐ ܪܫܸܡܠܲܢ ܡܲܠܟܵܐ: ܟܝܵܢܘܼܗܝ ܝܼܠܹܐ ܡܲܠܟܵܐ

3) Part three of the trial: Adjudication (vs.38)ܣܡܵܐ ܬܠܬ݉ ܕܕܝܲܢܬܵܐ: ܕܝܼܘܲܢ (ܓ̰ܪ. 38)

  • He went out to the Jews who were still outside and said to them, ‘Not guilty.
