Introduction
Christ is on his way to Jerusalem – last months of his life
He has developed some enemies – Pharisees & Scribes
Their anger is due to the fact that Jesus confronted them on their hypocrisy.
Wanting to attack Jesus back, they came up with the worst thing they could say about Him.
- Matthew 12:24
- Mark 3:22
They said to people, “he is a friend of sinners.”
- Luke 7:34
Occasion that leads to the story
All the tax gatherers and the sinners were coming near Him
- Luke 15:1
- Luke 14:35
Pharisees were outraged
- Luke 15:2
He has violated their Traditions and customs
First story of a shepherd who had 100 sheep.
- Luke 15:3-7
- Point of the story: Verse 7
Second story of woman who had 10 silver coins
- Luke 15:10
Third story is the main parable
- Recovery of lost son
- The joy of God over the recovery of a lost sinner
- Pharisees and Scribes actually appear in this story!
- Up to this point they were in agreement
Younger son
First, his request
- Luke 15:11-12a
- Prodigal means wasting
Pharisees and Scribes were shocked
Son is utterly disrespectful toward his father
- Basically saying, “Dad, I wish you were dead.”
- Son would be considered as dead
- Luke 15:24, 32
- Ousias (oo-see-ah), means goods, property, estate
- Deuteronomy 21:17
- All he wanted was the Ousias, and not the inheritance of klironomia.
Father divides the wealth
- Luke 15:12b
- At this point Pharisees are shocked
Why does the father grant him what the son wanted?
Because …
There was no way that Jesus could Portray grater shame upon a person than that act
There was no way that Jesus could portray greater shame upon a person than that act.
There was no way that Jesus could portray greater shame upon a person than that act.
